介系詞後面如果要加動詞
此動詞就是要有ing成動名詞
這是國中文法

He chopped the wagon hadle off instead of chopping the tree down.
chop就像你說的中文是砍的動作
這句話就是
1.chopped the wagon hadle off 第一個動作-->砍下馬車的把手
2.chopping the tree down第二個動作-->砍樹
這兩個動作只做第一個動作-->砍下馬車的把手
